A paragraph about “The Flipped Classroom.” Explain this instructional design by referring to chapter 10 and link to a source of educational videos.

Flipped classrooms take on the task of learning by a different approach, in hopes of facilitating and maximizing student learning teachers and students do a lot more work outside of the classroom than a typical class may. Students listen to a lecture or watch a video on the new content prior to coming to school and then once they are at school they can ask questions and work on solidifying new techniques. This approach to teaching requires access to outside resources such as the internet for students to view the direct instruction put together by their teacher. This style of learning while it may take more on both the student and the teachers part can allow for much more personalized learning and facilitation of information that may not be able to be offered in a traditional classroom. Teachers can personalize each lesson individually so that it caters the needs of each students rather than an in-class lesson that may be more of a generalize learning approach.

Having open education allows for the information and tools taught inside of the classroom to be more readily available on a wide range for those outside of the class, giving access to anyone and everyone who cares to view it. The four focus points of open content for education are reuse, revise, remix and redistribute and these are all in terms of how you share and upload the information to students and for what purpose. Because open education has become such a big thing, there are more websites than ever before that teachers can search for open content and material they can share about their lesson and what they are teaching. The possibilities are endless for Open education, there are so many different softwares and operating systems that teachers can use that they can choose whichever one they feel most comfortable with using. A lot of teachers have found that trial and error methods have been proven to work best, it gives teachers and students the opportunity to see which software or program they like the best and they use that one rather than being stuck using something that they do not like. To master this, it takes a lot of modifying content and changing it that’s where the revising and remixing comes in handy so that the content meets your individual needs.

From creating these PowerPoint assignments, I learned how to create an interactive quiz, test or game such as jeopardy. Prior to this assignment I was unaware how you do live action or directions such as next, previous and end the slide show. I think it is cool how you can do these things and I am very thankful that we learned how to do this in class. The two at home assignments we fun to create, I did them by myself and, so I was able to create a PowerPoint video and a quiz that I could potentially use when I am a teacher. I did not like how the assignments had to be a certain length because I felt like I was repeating myself a lot. But overall, I enjoyed both assignments.

As we progress within the classroom, using excel to collect data and survey the students can be very helpful. Teachers no matter what subject area or grade they teach can graphs to portray test/ quiz scores for the students to see how they measure up to the overall class average. This may be more useful for students in middle and high school but it can be used in any grade. When discussing specific subjects/ grade levels teachers that work with math and science are the ones that would typically use excel the most. In biology or earth science there are a lot of charts and experiments that the teachers would use excel to make charts/ graphs or display data to their students. As well as teachers that teach Statistics in the upper grade levels in high school. Statistics includes a lot of data surveying the require students and the teacher to have a forum such as excel to report the data that they have found.

Coming to the end of the semester, I have found looking at my fellow classmate’s blogs as very interesting. It is interesting to observe different opinions and ways of thinking from their blogs. We all receive the same requirements for what must be in the post but we record and talk about all different types of things. I have noticed that no two students mentioned the same thing in really any of the posts. Out of all the post I think the application parts of the posts are what I found most interesting, seeing the different ways that my classmates would apply what we have learned in class to their future career. This career not just within the education field but also the members of our class that are not education majors and may never become a teacher. Everything that we have learned in this class can be applicable to any field and career in the real world and seeing this being mentioned on my fellow classmate’s blogs is what I found most interesting.

I would like to learn more about mail merge on Microsoft word and Microsoft excel for existing programs, so that I can become Microsoft certified. I have found online tutorials or workshops that I could potentially attend to sharpen up my skills on these Microsoft programs. If we are looking at tangible technology that eventually could be found in a classroom; I would like to learn more about 3D printing/ the 3D pens and the virtual reality and how it can be applied within the classroom. To learn more about this technology I would love to go back to the Technology Sandbox or look on their website for information on these technologies. Staying up to date with the latest technology as it comes out and learning more about it will help teachers and myself be better prepared for when we are teachers in the future. I am a person that likes to know what is coming before it is here, thus learning and knowing how to work this technology will put me ahead of many others who are unaware of it’s existence.

Adaptive technologies are used in various ways, however inside of a classroom they can be used to assist students who have special needs or other exceptionalities that may be preventing them from succeeding within the classroom setting. Such as voice and touch interfaces, mobile operating systems that can assist with visual/ auditory or tactile learners. While these technologies do a lot of good for children within a classroom they can also be viewed as a distraction and a reason for children to act out within the classroom. Children also could fight over certain devices or even bully other children for having to use the device if they see it as a difference among the student body that stands out to them. After my brain surgery I used an IPAD to communicate what I was thinking to my teachers prior to gaining back the full ability to use my hands and write on my own. These technologies can include word processing programs, concept mapping, word prediction, text to speech programs and talking spell check. A lot of these programs are used daily by students that do not have any exceptionalities or disabilities simply because they help to make life easier.

Power points can be used to break up information and showcase it in a variety of different ways. Thus, using a power point for the blooms taxonomy for teaching a lesson would be simple. Say the lesson was on the food chain, the teacher would first create a lesson on the food chain that shows images and examples for each stage of the food chain. Then in more depth to evaluate each stage of the food chain and how it relates to the next one (both before and after) and how it affects the next. Using a Venn diagram to show how each stage of the food chain is connected to one another the students could analyze the similarities and differences. As well as by looking and figuring out where humans or their household pets fit into the food chain students can implement real world examples and make connections to their life. By asking discussion questions and skill check questions as the power point is progressing, the students can gain a better understanding of the topic and how it relates to the real world and their lives. Ending the power point with a final skill check that asks them questions and restates the main topic, the students will hopefully remember the lesson that is taught using a power point.

This website Teach Hub.com is a website that teachers and other members of the technology realm use to stay up to date on the latest technology, lesson and other shared resources. The website is a mix between a teacher’s technology blog, news post forum and professional development links as well. It has a little bit of everything on it that a teacher needs to know about the latest technology or updates coming as well as things teachers should look out for in their classrooms. This website seems to be updated often therefore it is a very relevant website that could be of use for teachers. Also, it is running by and facilitated by teachers and so they know exactly what is going on inside of the classroom so it can be relatable for the readers. If a reader wants to there is a discussion area for any additional comments that they may have. Overall this website shows to be very helpful and insightful.

So far using twitter has been very helpful for EME 2040 because my fellow classmates post about our assignments and their opinions on the assignments. I love using twitter for my own personal social uses but I had never considered using it for anything more than that prior to this class. It is very interesting that twitter a social bookmarking tool that can also be used as an educational resource for learning within a classroom. I have yet to experience any real issues with using twitter because I was already familiar with the app prior to this class and so everything is running smoothly so far. Twitter appears to be a helpful tool and adds character to this class because it connects us outside of the classroom as well as inside. Twitter is a source for information and easily answerable questions, that your peers or teachers could help you answer. It is also a way to express yourself and share your opinions for everyone else to see and comment on.

Before this webpage design assignment in another class I had previously taken, we also had to create and design our own webpage and so this was not something new for me. I did enjoy working on my webpage because it gave me the opportunity and reason to show my creative side and showcase my abilities on an assignment. I believe that websites are a very helpful and a good resource that can be used in my future career as an Elementary Educator. Websites allow for the parents, students and fellow faculty members to be included with what is going on in my classroom and stay up to date. Updating and working on my website is something that I found to be very easy and something that I could stay up with when I become a teacher in the future. I think next time I need to put more time and effort into my website and I could make major improvements on it if just spent a little bit more time on it. I know in the future I won’t have to make so much up because it will all be a reality and the truth so that will make the assignment easier to complete as well.

As we work with Diigo more I am becoming more familiar and used to the idea of using a social book marking tool. Prior to this class I never would have even considered or known how to use a social book marking tool such as Diigo. It is a helpful tool that once you have the hang of it, it is very simple and easy to use. For using it inside of a classroom, students and parents would easily be able to access a variety of websites and links that the teacher has provided for them. Using a tool such as Diigo would eliminate the stress and miscommunication between students and the parents as there would be a clear outline of which website to use and how to access it. For teachers that are heads of subject area departments or those that just want to share website links and information to their fellow faculty members Diigo allows them to do this very easily and seamlessly.  Education is all about learning new things and broadening your horizon and a tool like Diigo assists this process along from a positive outlook.

The school that I searched was my old high school, Dixie Hollins High. Once on the website I specifically looked for the Cambridge portion of the website, because I knew that my teachers worked hard while I was in the program to keep this portion of the website updated with the latest information for both students and the parents. On this portion of the school’s website you can find the list of subjects, classes and teachers that teach the Cambridge classes. You can also find what materials you need for each class and a brief description of what goes on in these classrooms. Since it is high school, there is also a spot for scholarship opportunities and college tour tabs that are open to all upper level students. The students that would be accessing this website could be prospective high school grade levels 6-8 or students that attend Dixie grade 9-12. It also goes into further detail about what Cambridge is, the benefits of the program and shares success stories of past graduates from the program and where they are now. Along Dixie’s website there are also portions for the other programs such as Culinary Arts and Cosmetology that serve the same purpose as the Cambridge page. These website portions are under authority of the teachers for each program and it is up to them to keep the website up to date.

As I begin my career in the teaching profession, I believe that using technology to accomplish my professional goals is going to be extremely important. Technology will allow me to effectively stay in contact with my students and their parents. As well as technology being a major component in the learning and retaining information process, it also is a great learning facilitator. Technology can be used as an aid to make teaching easier and more effective from not just a teacher’s perspective but also the student as well. Increasing a teacher’s productivity with the help of apps, administrative software and classroom management software a teacher can focus on what’s most important being the students and not so worried about other things. I think that technology especially the different software’s such as the Microsoft package are going to be key components of having an effective and smooth-running classroom. I look forward to using the technology skills that I have and learning even more once I am in a classroom setting.

I was in complete amazement after touring the Sandbox, it is truly amazing the technology and advancements that we have made it is truly breath taking. I enjoyed the tour a lot and I’m very thankful that we could take a tour and experience it all. All the devices that were found in the sandbox can potentially be used in the classroom in some way. I know especially the SMART interactive devices such as the SMART board and the interactive projector are very useful tools in a lower grade level classroom. As the students love to use these interactive devices to play games and watch videos. With interactive devices in classrooms, they can be used as incentives and prizes or even made to be part of a lesson for students especially for those in Elementary school. Something like the Google Glass could be used in an upper grade level science class to have an interactive laboratory right in the palm of the student’s hand as well as a 3D Printer/ Scanner. 3D printing is the way of the future and for students to be able to experience this inside of a classroom would put them a level above the rest.

Learning How to Increase Learner Engagement:

Subjects of this video were: Classroom Management, Higher Education, Education + E-Learning and Teacher Professional Development

Completed on: 10/2/17 at 11:30

I have begun this online video, on Lynda.com titled Learning How to Increase Learner Engagement under the Education and E-learning category. Within this video, there were several quizzes along the way towards the end of the video to ensure that I was paying attention and fully engaged with what the video was talking about. This video focused on Passive vs. Active learning techniques and the difference between the two for students. It also went into detail about the ways teachers and educators can increase engagement with the help of different strategies such as introducing more problem-based learning, flip charts, index cards and much more. Students learn best with an active learning environment, because they have been found to keep the student engaged with what is being taught in their class and they don’t have time to be distracted or not paying attention to what is being taught.  Students learn how to actively think, learn and work with the content that is being taught.  Lecturing alone is not enough to effectively teach and keep students engaged in learning, much more needs to be done and changed to allow students to receive the proper level of knowledge from a lesson or lecture. Think, pair and share is the key to a successful learning environment.  There are various ways that teachers can explore to get their students more engaged in a lesson, such as using index cards, flip charts and other digital tolls like blogs or twitter. The trick is to find what works best in your classroom with the students and go from there.
